To lose fat we know that you have to burn more calories than you consume. So we either increase our calories burned or decrease our calories consumed or both.

In this article, we are focusing on increasing our calories burned and overlooking decreasing our calories consumed. But how do we achieve weight loss without counting calories?

One pound of fat is equal to 3,500 calories. If you burned an extra 500 calories every day, you would lose about a pound every week. Exercise without diet can get you results but the most important question is do you want to "workout"?

If you enjoy the gym or structured workouts then your answer is yes, but what if it's no? So many of us believe this is the only way to obtain weight loss results and I'm here to tell you there's a more sustainable way.

The key to getting back in shape is finding a fun physical activity that you find exciting. If you enjoy and are driven to partake in an activity that gets your body moving and burning calories you won't have to convince yourself to do it.

We know that habits develop over time and when you enjoy activities dopamine is released during them. This further engrains the habit in your brain. If you want to lose weight without trying, joy is your answer!

Now the question is what physical activities will I enjoy and where do I start?

  1. Look back to your youth and remember what used to bring you joy. Did you love rollerblading with friends, going on hikes with your family, swimming laps in the pool for hours on end, what was your thing?

  2. Look deep into your desires. Have you always wanted to try dancing classes, did you dream of one day getting into cycling, or have you been interested in joining your job's kickball team?

  3. Assess your environment for support. Does your rec center have different leagues you can join? Does your community have a country club, bike/walking path, basketball courts, soccer fields, tennis courts, etc? What's easy and close by?

  4. Assess your support circle. Do your coworkers play volleyball before work every day? Do your friends do yoga and spinning classes every week? Do your kids like to jump and the trampoline park weekly?
