How To Construct Motivation

A Motivating Vision

Motivation is the reason you have for behaving in a particular way. It's the "why" to everything you do and don't do. A distinguished method to find your reason for living a certain way is to create a vision statement to use as your motivator.

From this vision, you can reflect and craft a plan to get to this ideal life of you thriving. When you aren't following through on this plan, revisit your vision, and let it uplift you to take action.

Take a step back and imagine the future you want for yourself. Be realistic yet inspiring and list out the key aspects of this vision.

Consider how you feel, how your energy is, what you look like, what you're doing more of, and who you're spending your time with. Now sum this up into a powerful "vision statement" of who you will be, stated in the present tense.

Examples:

"I'm assisting as many people on their wellness journeys as optimally possible and living a life filled with adventure by climbing higher and hiking further with my family and friends."

"I'm at my ideal weight, physically active 4 times a week, and eating a healthy diet that I enjoy."

Motivation To Action

Now that you know where you're heading, you can better plan how to get there! When planning new behavior, there's a secret formula to ensure they have powerful motivation. The key elements are:

Interest & Enjoyment + Values & Beliefs = Motivation

Interest And Enjoyment

Choose behavior changes that interest you. Determine what you're attracted to and what draws you toward it. Not only does interest have to be there, but discover what behaviors you would enjoy. Select things that excite you and make you happy when you partake in the behavior.

Values And Beliefs

Uncover things that will accomplish your objectives. Interest and enjoyment are only half the picture. These behaviors you select are to get you to your goals and be of value.

Too many people try to do things they think they "should do" unsuccessfully because it doesn't connect with their beliefs. Uncover behaviors that you truly resonate with. Locate these things that honestly bring you closer to your vision.
